The artisanal pottery pieces in Gran Canaria continue being manufactured as it used to be in the past, with no use of wheel or machines. The' loceras', as the women dedicated to make pottery pieces (‘loza'), would make each one with their bare hands as only tool, and maybe some natural help from a rolling stone, or dry cane. The activity would be carried out always in areas where good quality clay could be found, and the men were in charge of its extraction and carrying to the pottery kiln. Once shaped the pieces would go back to the men's hands to place these inside a communal or a private kiln in order to bake it. The pottery areas in Gran Canaria are three, and one of them, in Lugarejos (Artenara), is part of the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve.
