Goats and sheep from the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve has provided great artisanal cheeses internationally recognized. The international contest World Cheese Awards landed in Gran Canaria in 2009 to celebrate this event due to the surprising quantity and quality of the cheeses being presented every year to this contest. The traditional artisanal production of these  cheeses made out of goat mil, sheep milk or a mix of both, makes of the cheese a very important element in the Canaries gastronomy, where the average consumption per habitant is one of the highest in Spain.
